Classic Gold - Team Selection/Draft

All players register individually each season. Teams are totally re-formed every fall. Returning players from the fall season remain on the same team for spring season. New players in the spring season (anyone who did not play the preceding fall season) will be placed into the draft and placed on a team as space allows.

Registered CWSL Classic Gold may choose one person to partner with when they register in the fall season. Both players must indicate their interest in playing with one another during the registration process and fully paid within registration period.

Fall Team Draft Procedure
All Administrative Council (AC) members will attend and participate in Fall Team Blind Draft (BD) meeting usually scheduled early in the week after last Open Play date.

All players, including AC members, will be placed in the BD. Each AC member will serve only as a recorder for a team. As the draft proceeds, the AC may or may not be a draft to the team roster she is recording and managing during the BD process. There is also the possibility that 1, 2, 3 or all of the AC members could be blind-drafted onto the same team due to "luck of the draw".

Evaluations:  All players will have an assigned relative numeric evaluation, derived from at least one Open Play, captain post-season evaluation or an average of both, used for purposes of the blind draft process. Said evaluation has been standardized to include skill, fitness, speed   and game I.Q. factors and has various input from different captains over the course of time. ALL REGISTERED PLAYERS will be evaluated anew for the FALL 2017 season. Care is taken to update these evaluations for current influences, i.e. recent childbirth, recent injury, last time played.

Blind Draft: Throughout the Blind Draft, after a team roster gains a player, the recording AC member for that team will tally the current team valuation (average of collective player evaluations).

Round One: Blind pick a goalie for each team. (Review number and skill level of goalies before draft begins to assure each person belongs in goalie pool instead of the general player pool.)

  • Draft all full time goalies then part time goalies.
  • When each team has one assigned goalie . . .

a. in the order of the team with the lowest valuated goalie to the team with the highest valuated goalie, each AC will blind draft another goalie (valuations known) from the remaining goalie pool for her assigned team.

b.  When each teams roster contains at least 2 part-time goalies, the AC members can elect to place the remaining part-time goalie candidates back into the general player pool. Or if they are to be assigned as goalies, repeat (B.) until all goalies are placed on a team roster. Otherwise, proceed to Round Two.

Round Two: Begin field player blind draft.

A. If at any time during Round 2 a team's valuation becomes apparently distorted, either disproportionately higher or lower than the other teams' values, all AC members will confer to find and apply an appropriate remedy before re-adopting the outlined procedures below.

B.  All partnered field players will be drafted first, then individuals.

C.  Player field position and evaluation will be displayed but names will be withheld until pick is completed:

a. The 2 teams holding the lowest team valuation will blind-draft from the higher-skilled player pool.

 b. The 2 teams holding the highest team valuation will blind-draft from the lower skilled player pool.

D.  Re-compute team valuations after each pick and repeat (2C.) until each team has at least 5 total players including goalies on the roster.

E. At this juncture, AC members will switch to record/blind-draft for a different team.

F. Complete process (2C.) until all players are on a team roster.

Reconciliation Round: A brief review of team rosters may suggest that a judicious and limited number of player trades should occur to ensure the best distribution of player positions has been drafted to each team. This will be a time-limited discussion and will be enacted only to rectify blatant imbalance of team make-up
